Failed IVF Cycles and Fertility Clinics: What most are missing (and what the science says too)

Jul 21, 2026

You've done everything your IVF clinic told you to do. The monitoring scans, the injections, the blood tests at 7am, the supplements lined up on your kitchen bench like a tiny pharmacy. And still, you're lying awake at 2am typing "why did my IVF cycle fail" into Google, hoping this time an answer shows up that actually makes sense.

Here's the thing nobody at your fertility clinic sits you down and tells you. There's a piece of IVF prep that rarely makes it onto your protocol, not because it doesn't matter, but because it's not really anyone's job to bring it up. And the research on it is stronger than you'd think.

In episode 2 of Ready. Set. IVF., I dig into exactly this. What it is, why it gets missed, and what the actual science says about it.

Does stress affect IVF success? Here's what the research actually says

Let's start with what it feels like to be you right now. You're managing medication schedules, work, appointments, and a body that feels like it's not cooperating, all while trying to hold yourself together in front of everyone who asks how you're going. It's exhausting in a way that's hard to explain to someone who hasn't lived it.

A 1993 Harvard Medical School study measured psychological distress across women with infertility, cancer, cardiac rehabilitation, chronic pain, hypertension and HIV. Women with infertility scored just as high as the cancer and cardiac rehab patients. Let that sit for a second. Nobody tells a cancer patient to just relax and think positive. But somehow, women doing IVF are still fighting to have their stress taken seriously.

So if you've been ticking every box in your prep and you're still not getting pregnant, this might be a contributing factor.

What most fertility clinics miss (and what I cover in this episode)

In the episode, I walk through what's actually happening inside your body when stress goes on for months instead of minutes. Not the fluffy version. The biology.

When your brain perceives a threat, whether that's an actual crisis or the phone call from your clinic about how many eggs fertilised, it releases cortisol and adrenaline. Your body can't tell the difference. And when those hormones stay elevated for the length of an IVF cycle, the hormones your reproductive system actually needs, oestrogen, progesterone, LH, FSH, get pushed down in response. Your eggs feel it too. So does his sperm.

I also unpack why the usual advice, relax, go on holiday, just be positive, doesn't work and never has. It's not because you're not trying hard enough. It's because your body doesn't process stress through logic or willpower. It responds to breath, sound, touch and movement. So I share four simple techniques I use with my own clients, ones that take seconds, not hours, and are actually designed around how your nervous system works.

The one thing I want you to walk away with

If you take nothing else from this episode, take this. None of what you're feeling right now is your fault, and you are not overreacting. A 2011 study out of Boston IVF found that women who did a mind-body program alongside their IVF treatment had a pregnancy rate of 52%, compared to 20% in the group that didn't. Same clinic. Same treatment. The only difference was how they managed their stress.

That's not woo-woo. That's evidence that how to reduce stress during IVF isn't a nice-to-have, it's something worth building into your prep the same way you'd build in your supplements or your scans.
